Tax Credit Overpayment Query

Here is an example of a typical enquiry we get, with obviously all details removed to reserve strict confidentiality.

Dear Sir,

I believe you can help with us being accused of  tax credits overpayment,

in 2007 we were told we have an overpayment of £1,525. we contacted them and appealed because I phoned them and told them when my child left collage, and I phoned them when I had my annual rise at work as I have always told them about any change as soon as it happens.

Then we had a £600 approx cheque from them, and my husband phoned them and said what is this for , and they said it was an underpayment, my husband said we don’t want to cash it because you say we owe you money. He said that we don’t owe any and to cash it.

We never heard again in 7 years till now. In last few years we have been claiming again when my husband retired as we were on a low wage, so we have been claiming about £20 a week for two years and nothing was said about an overpayment until we just filled in our renewal pack this year when we get a letter to say we owe £1,800.  It has now gone to EQUITA .   This is 7 years later we have not heard anything all this time please help us, we have moved and I dont have any records or proof of so long ago.  We have tried on several times to speak to someone and get given different phone numbers, passed from pillar to post or they say its out of their hands,

yours sincerely

Mr and Mrs
