Cohabiters / Living together
An Article in the Solicitors Journal 21 July 2015 www.solicitorsjournal.com is well worth a look.
It is said that 1 in 8 of couples in the UK who live together are not married, both in different and same-sex relationships. The legal rules affecting living together are confusing. There is no such thing as a common-law wife, although in a survey 58% thought otherwise. When these relationships break down, the fallout can be significant, particularly when the couple have children.

I’m surprised to hear that there is no such thing as a common law wife – I feel that I should know more about the facts.

Very interesting, thanks for a great link as well!
You are welcome! Let us know if you need any advice or assistance on the subject.
I think it is a ridiculous law, especially if a couple have children. So they are not married-so what?! But it is completely unfair that a woman does not have a leg to stand on if a couple split up, yet a wife gets 50% of all assets, if not more. This law should be changed asap.
Thank you for your comments, Mary.
All the best,
Rodney
They need to make the rules a bit clearer!
Thanks Tommy. If you ever need help clearing up the rules please feel free to contact us on 0207 381 8111 or [email protected]

Dear Sir,
Thank you for posting this interesting article. What is your view on a change in the law in this area? I thought I read somewhere that the house of Lords were preparing to push a new bill through changing this law? Yours, D Black.
To discuss this please call us on 0207 381 8111 or email [email protected]
I thought I was protected ? I have children and am now worried about what would happen because we are not married.
We can help reduce your worry about not being protected. Contact us on 0207 381 8111 or email at [email protected] and we can discuss matters further. Rodney
The best way around this would be to set up some sort of an agreement where the so called “common law wife” will be protected. Is there such an agreement?
Certainly we can help. Call us on 0207 381 8111 and we can advise you on setting up an agreement. Alternatively you can email on [email protected]
I think it’s outrageous that you can invest so much into a relationship yet end up with nothing. Can an agreement protect a partner ?
An agreement can offer protection. Hylton-Potts is experienced in this area of law and can assist if that would help ? Contact us by email [email protected] or telephone 0207 381 8111 in the first instance.
